We have had a direct report regarding Dengue, and the outbreak is now reported within TravelHealthPro. Many local travellers in Surrey visit the region this time of the year.

Most people if infected with dengue remain symptom free. Symptoms include an abruptly high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting and a rash. Most infections are self-limiting, with a rapid recovery three to four days after the rash appears.

A small number of people can develop severe illness with symptoms which can include dangerously low blood pressure (shock), build-up of fluid in the lungs and severe bleeding. There is no specific drug treatment for severe dengue illness, although hospital admission and careful management of fever, fluid balance and pain can help with recovery. If left untreated, severe dengue illness can be fatal.

Dengue is spread by daytime feeding mosquitos. Travellers are advised to take basic bite prevention measures such as covering up when possible and use of sprays.

The new QDenga vaccine is two doses, given three months apart provides long lasting protection. It is suitable for individuals aged 4 years and above. It is a live vaccine, and therefore it is not suitable for everyone.
