On 24 February 2017 the Hidalgo County Health Department reported a Zika case from the City of McAllen. No travel history outside Hidalgo County has been established and further investigation is ongoing. The last locally acquired case in Texas was reported on 25 January 2017.

Zika Virus is most commonly spread by mosquito bites, but there is also a risk of sexual transmission. There is a link between Zika infection and babies being born with birth defects.

Global Health Travel Clinic will advise on all aspects of travel at risk zones. If you are not sure talk to one of our clinicians to get free advice.

All travellers have a responsibility to help protect themselves. Here are some suggestions:

  • Always follow strict mosquito bite avoidance, which includes using insect repellents and wearing appropriate clothing.
  • Practice safe sex to help avoid sexual transmission of Zika.
  • Pregnant women should postpone non-essential travel to high/moderate risk countries/areas. Seek advice if travelling to low risk areas.
  • If any fever develops whilst travelling or on return seek medical attention quickly.
